Stroll through decorated neighborhoods.

December 23, 2008

My husband is from a small town in Northern California . A really small town. Though they don't have a club or a mall in that town, at Christmas they have Candy Cane Lane . It's a street in the middle of a neighborhood where all the houses on either side of the street have decorated the front of their houses and lawns to the hilt. Lights and ornaments and reindeer everywhere. The first  Read more...

Hanukkah in Honolulu

December 22, 2008

I don't know if it's that I just don't know where to look, but I don't think we have any Hanukkah activities around town that our kids can participate in.   I think it may be more of a private Holiday for the Jewish.   I'd still like to expose Noah to Hanukkah as the start of his acceptance of other cultures and beliefs different than our family's.   So, I plan to do some simple  Read more...

In trying to compile a whole bunch of Christmas events and activities for you in one place, I've come to find that you really need to plan in Honolulu in order do these things. There are a bunch of breakfasts and events with Santa that could be really fun for our kids, but they get sold out in November. So it would do you no good if I were to list those events here. I know. I'm sad too  Read more...

Honolulu City Lights

December 08, 2008

If you haven't seen this , it's definitely worth a gander. Your little one will be amazed, and you'll get a nice stroll around a part of our city you probably don't frequent. Our family usually took a trip the weekend before Christmas to get us into the spirit. What is it? It's a bunch of things actually. There are various light displays, and large statues, and an even  Read more...

Your own perfect book

November 06, 2008

I've tried to utilize Noah's love books to help him explore other skills and experiences. I copied the idea from his preschool teacher, and made a book at home about Noah, himself. I stapled some pages together between sheets of colorful construction paper. On the first page, Noah wrote is own name out. You can make out the lopsided and multisized letters just fine. On another  Read more...

September 26, 2008

It's pretty quiet this next week. Things are slowing down as people gear up for the Fall and Halloween. It's a good time to spend some time doing simple things with your family like going to the beach or visiting the zoo. In any case, here are some great things you can do with your preschooler. I've done all the hard work for you and compiled a list of things specifically for preschoolers.  Read more...

It takes two: things to do that's more fun with a pal

September 23, 2008

Sometimes things are just more fun with a friend by your side. That's why I can't wait til Natalie gets a little older so that Noah has a constant built in friend to play (and fight) with. I've been lucky to have friends with little ones Noah's age and with a little bit of effort we've had great times together. Some activities that's much better with a pal: Jumping on the bed.  Read more...

Learning to get along

September 04, 2008

We're lucky to live next to a park where we can expect to find familiar playmates for Noah every afternoon. It sets up a good situation where I can get involved in Noah's social education that I otherwise miss at school. One of the main lessons we're constantly working on is sharing. Sharing is a hard concept for our preschoolers, isn't it? Noah totally expects the other kids to  Read more...

A special rule when visiting Hawaii's beaches

August 20, 2008

In retrospect, I think I should have made this the first post of the month. But having grown up here in Hawaii , it's such common knowledge to me that it didn't occur to me as something special to explain. But while researching the subject of Beaches on our island, I kept coming upon warnings for tourists who may not know. And I could see how you may not know if you are just visitng us, or  Read more...

Best Places to See Fish in Honolulu

August 19, 2008

Fish was one of the first signs Noah learned to sign at 9 months.   He'd wiggle his little hand back and forth frantically whenever he saw one.   Later when he acquired speech, he'd still make the sign with his hands has he yelled fishy!   Even now at three, when he sees a large tank full of these critters, I'll see Noah's hand fishtailing at his side.   There are several places that  Read more...

Water fun at the playground

August 18, 2008

Summer is ticking away, but you can't tell here in Hawaii . We're lucky the days will remain warm for months to come. Which means summer fun with your preschooler doesn't have to end. Part of summer fun is to do things you wouldn't necessarily do otherwise. Like, getting completely drenched during an innocent visit to the playground. A drinking fountain stands in the  Read more...

In search of bugs

August 14, 2008

Sometimes it amazes me how truly a BOY Noah is. That has to be why he loves bugs so much when I beg and beg him to leave them alone. Some days we'll head out of our condo with a paper cup to look for bugs. It's something his father taught him; how to get a good look at the bug in the confines of a paper cup and then let it go. Honestly though, I hope each time that the bugs have all  Read more...

Bringing home flowers

August 06, 2008

Even with all the talk I write about how urban our city is, I KNOW that we live in a beautiful city surrounded by nature. Whenever I come back from a long stay on the mainland, I am in awe at how even the weeds are pretty here in Hawaii . Which is probably why, it's hard to go for a walk with your child without noticing the beautiful flowers all around. When I walk alone, I tend to  Read more...

Enjoying the Baseball Parks in Honolulu

July 29, 2008

Ala Wai Community park is right behind us. Besides the playground, the public gardens and stream that runs through it, there is also a baseball diamond that gets used fairly often. Schools use it for practice and games. Senior leagues and other groups also get games and tournaments together. Noah has seen a lot of baseball and softball in action. We sit on a little knoll under  Read more...

Sometimes you have to just get away...

July 16, 2008

To go anywhere from Hawaii , you pretty much have to take a plane. That's getting harder to do with the rise in airfare. My brother is getting married this summer and there's been more than a few guests who aren't going to be able to make it from Korea and the Mainland because of ticket prices. But sometimes you just want to get away. No, not to where everybody knows your name, but just  Read more...
