Best playdate spots

September 09, 2008

Not all fun places are created equal. Some adventures are better done alone. For instance, i arranged a play date at the park recently. It didn't go well because there was so much space to run and the other little boy turned out to love running just as much as Noah does. Us moms couldn't get a minute to sit and talk because we were constantly chasing after our boys. And the boys never got  Read more...

Learning to get along

September 04, 2008

We're lucky to live next to a park where we can expect to find familiar playmates for Noah every afternoon. It sets up a good situation where I can get involved in Noah's social education that I otherwise miss at school. One of the main lessons we're constantly working on is sharing. Sharing is a hard concept for our preschoolers, isn't it? Noah totally expects the other kids to  Read more...

Water fun at the playground

August 18, 2008

Summer is ticking away, but you can't tell here in Hawaii . We're lucky the days will remain warm for months to come. Which means summer fun with your preschooler doesn't have to end. Part of summer fun is to do things you wouldn't necessarily do otherwise. Like, getting completely drenched during an innocent visit to the playground. A drinking fountain stands in the  Read more...

In search of bugs

August 14, 2008

Sometimes it amazes me how truly a BOY Noah is. That has to be why he loves bugs so much when I beg and beg him to leave them alone. Some days we'll head out of our condo with a paper cup to look for bugs. It's something his father taught him; how to get a good look at the bug in the confines of a paper cup and then let it go. Honestly though, I hope each time that the bugs have all  Read more...

Bringing home flowers

August 06, 2008

Even with all the talk I write about how urban our city is, I KNOW that we live in a beautiful city surrounded by nature. Whenever I come back from a long stay on the mainland, I am in awe at how even the weeds are pretty here in Hawaii . Which is probably why, it's hard to go for a walk with your child without noticing the beautiful flowers all around. When I walk alone, I tend to  Read more...

What shall we play with at the park?

July 31, 2008

I think I mentioned before that we visit our park before dinner almost every weekday. The routine is, my husband will get home from work, grab a snack and we'll head down to the park. There are other families who have the same habit who we've become friends with over the last couple of years. But before we head out, there's a decision to be made every time. Which park toy should we  Read more...

Enjoying the Baseball Parks in Honolulu

July 29, 2008

Ala Wai Community park is right behind us. Besides the playground, the public gardens and stream that runs through it, there is also a baseball diamond that gets used fairly often. Schools use it for practice and games. Senior leagues and other groups also get games and tournaments together. Noah has seen a lot of baseball and softball in action. We sit on a little knoll under  Read more...

Where are the swings?

June 12, 2008

When we moved back to Hawaii in 2006, I noticed something very interesting at most of the parks and playgrounds. No swings. Our beloved Ala Wai park still had the metal frame that the swings used to hang on, but no swings. We visited several other parks and although they had new play structures, no swings. Coming from the mainland where we took Noah to swing on some swings  Read more...

Top 5 things to do when the sun shines in Honolulu

May 26, 2008

I know this might seem like something that doesn't need mentioning, but this is a blog about things to do with your kids in our city, and our city just happens to be very sunny. So here are some ways to enjoy our city on a typical day in paradise: Romp through the Honolulu Zoo . Make sure to lather on the sunscreen, take your own water and head to  Read more...

The littlest Piccasso: Chalk drawings

May 22, 2008

I loved drawing in our driveway with sidewalk chalk growing up. But where do you use sidewalk chalk if you live in a condo with no personal driveway? We've found that the surface of the basketball court down at our favorite back yard park, Ala Wai Park is a great place for sidewalk chalk. The park fills with parents and young children between the hours of 4 and 6 almost every  Read more...

Room to run

May 15, 2008

I have a runner. Noah crawled at 6 months, walked at 10 months and was running circles around people at his first birthday party. Even now, when the elevator doors in our condo open at our floor, he takes off running at full speed down the hallway to our door. Other adults who've cared for him (babysitters, teachers, grandparents) have said that he's  Read more...
