Tips for a safe trick or treating time

October 30, 2008

Tomorrow the mini ghouls and superheros will be out trouncing around neighborhoods, kindly asking for candy. If you go trick or treating, whether it's at a mall or in your neighborhood, here are some tips to make sure your child is safe during all the fun: Make sure your child's costume doesn't restrict him in any way. Check the length to make sure the bottom clears the shoes so he  Read more...

Healthy, alternative Halloween treats

October 29, 2008

If you're like me, you love to please. On Halloween that means giving out the good stuff, candy. But, if you feel like there will be a candy overload anyway, and you want to give out something that can actually be good for the kids, have no fear. There are lots more great alternatives now compared to years past when it was just raisins or toothbrushes. Playdoh . Always a fun  Read more...

Best trick or treat spot

October 28, 2008

If you are a family who trick or treats the old fashioned way, where are you taking your child to beg for candy this Halloween? I grew up in Kalama Valley out in Hawaii Kai. Trick or treating out there was amazing. We lived right across the street from a guy who ran a Haagen Daz. He scooped out ice cream cones to young and old alike, every Halloween. I would go across the  Read more...

Getting ready for those preschool halloween goodie bags?

October 23, 2008

Last year, Noah attended a school that allowed treats and goodie bags on special days. At first, it was fun and cute, but towards the end of the Holiday season at Easter, I wondered who started the madness in the first place. Because I knew we would receive, I felt I HAD to give and I'm sure all the other parents felt the same way, so the whole thing went around in a circle.  Read more...

Crockpot Caramel Apples; our new tradition

October 22, 2008

We can get apples any time of year, but for some reason, I associate them with the Fall season. When the Halloween candy shows up in the supermarket, it makes me want to buy lots of crunchy apples to eat whole and bake into pies. But this year we did something else with our apples too. We covered them in melted caramel, and gobbled them up. It's something I am adding to our lives as a  Read more...

Halloween books at our house

October 20, 2008

Ive started to compile a Holiday box of books. I buy books that have to do with specific holidays and put them in the box, pulling them out in a timely manner. As soon as October began, I went to the box and sifted through it. It's been a long time since the last kid holiday and it was nice to bring out some fun stories. I also bought a few more to add to our growing collection.  Read more...

Our very own Island Pumpkin Patch

October 09, 2008

These days kids in Hawaii are way more savvy than when I was a kid. Part of the reason for this is the wealth of experiences they get to experience first hand. For instance, when I was of trick or treating age, I had only television and books tell me what visiting a pumpkin patch would be like. I eventually did get to pick my own pumpkin at a farm and sit on some hay for a ride, but that  Read more...

Let the costume search begin!

October 07, 2008

All stores have firmly established their Candy aisle so it must be that time of year again to put together the perfect costumes to wear on Halloween. You could probably find something at Walmart, the Disney store, or Gymboree. But the premade costumes that you find at those stores are usually made with cooler weather in mind. Halloween night here in Hawaii is usually warm and sticky, so I  Read more...
